There is plenty of storyline, involving stolen firearms and bookmaking operations and unfortunate romance, but the series is largely about Shelby's amazing moodiness versus Campbell's moralistic zealotry. His principal competition is Campbell, a Javert-like cop in Northern Ireland. The barbarous but delicate protagonist is Tommy Shelby, a war hero with battle flashbacks that, like Michael Corleone, desires to turn his family's gang to some valid enterprise.
